Help Us Protect Nelson’s Future

Nelson is more than a backdrop for luxury development—it’s a community built on creativity, simplicity, and a strong sense of local identity.

But right now, that identity is at risk. The current draft of Nelson’s new Official Community Plan still includes a 2019 amendment that created a “Village Centre” designation at Granite Pointe. This carve-out opened the door for the proposed Hallō luxury mall and exclusive residences—a vision that threatens to reshape Nelson for the benefit of outsiders, not locals.

We believe this amendment should be removed.

    Your Message

Here is the letter we will submit to Nelson City Council on your behalf:

To: Nelson City Council and Planning Department
Subject: Remove 2019 OCP Amendment at Granite Pointe

    Dear Mayor and Council,

As a resident of Nelson, I am writing to ask that the City remove the 2019 OCP amendment that allowed for a commercial hub at Granite Pointe.

This amendment has emboldened developers to market a so-called “luxury resort community” centered on this commercial hub, even going so far as to claim it was already “penciled in” to the OCP. Whether realistic or not, these plans do not reflect the needs or values of our community. Even if only partially realized, such development would accelerate gentrification, undermine affordability, and divert activity away from Baker Street.

I respectfully request that Council restore the Granite Pointe area to its pre-2019 OCP status, removing the commercial hub designation entirely.

Nelson’s future should be guided by thoughtful, sustainable, and inclusive planning—not luxury resort development for outsiders.

Thank you for considering this request.

    Sincerely,
